Core MSCI Emerging Markets

The cheaper, broader cousin of EEM, IEMG was designed for investors who want to own emerging markets and hold them for years. It tracks the MSCI Emerging Markets Investable Market Index, which reaches further down the size scale to include small-cap companies, so it holds more names than the older fund. BlackRock launched it in 2012 as part of its low-cost Core lineup, pricing it well below EEM to win retirement and buy-and-hold money. The exposure is the familiar emerging-markets mix, dominated by China, Taiwan, India and South Korea, with TSMC, Tencent and Samsung among the largest positions. Investors use it as the single emerging-markets slice of a diversified portfolio. As with any EM fund, results depend heavily on China's economy and on the dollar, and the ride can be volatile.
