iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF

High-yield corporate bonds, the debt of companies rated below investment grade, are the raw material of HYG. The iShares fund from BlackRock tracks a Markit iBoxx index of large, liquid U.S. dollar junk bonds and bundles hundreds of them into one exchange-traded position. It was among the first of its kind when it launched in 2007 and remains one of the most traded credit instruments on the market, which is why professionals often use it as a fast proxy for the whole high-yield sector or as a hedge. Investors hold it for the elevated income that riskier corporate borrowers pay, accepting greater default and price risk than they would with Treasuries or investment-grade bonds. Its price tends to fall when the economy weakens and credit spreads widen, behaving more like equities than like government debt during stress.
