Platinum's price is driven less by investment demand than gold's is; most of it goes into automobile catalytic converters, with the rest split between jewelry and industrial uses, so the metal tracks the health of the car industry and broader manufacturing as much as any safe-haven role. Investors buy PPLT to own the metal outright, whether as a diversifier from gold or as a bet on tightening supply from a handful of South African and Russian mines.
