About Dow Jones Industrial Average
Older than any other stock gauge still in use, the Dow Jones Industrial Average remains the most quoted, even if professionals prefer others. Created by Charles Dow in 1896, it tracks just 30 large American companies, a hand-picked roster meant to represent the broad economy, and its level is the number that leads the evening news when the market rises or falls. Its method is a relic: the Dow is price-weighted, so a stock with a high share price sways it more than a much larger company with a cheaper one, a quirk that makes it a less accurate mirror of the market than the cap-weighted S&P 500. A committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices decides which companies belong, swapping members occasionally to keep it current. Despite its flaws, the Dow endures as a cultural touchstone and a rough shorthand for how big, established American business is faring, watched by the public more than by fund managers.
