Created by Charles Dow in 1896, it tracks just 30 large American companies, a hand-picked roster meant to represent the broad economy, and its level is the number that leads the evening news when the market rises or falls. Its method is a relic: the Dow is price-weighted, so a stock with a high share price sways it more than a much larger company with a cheaper one, a quirk that makes it a less accurate mirror of the market than the cap-weighted S&P 500. A committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices decides which companies belong, swapping members occasionally to keep it current.
