About Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund
Technology stocks in the S&P 500 are carved out and sold on their own in XLK. State Street's SPDR fund holds only the index members classified in the information-technology sector and weights them by market value, so Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia together make up a very large portion of the portfolio. One quirk trips up newcomers: under the standard sector rules, Alphabet and Meta count as communication services and are absent here, so the fund is less about the internet and more about hardware, software and semiconductors. Running since 1998, it is one of the original sector SPDRs and among the cheapest and most liquid ways to overweight big-cap tech. Investors use it to tilt toward the sector without single-stock risk, though its heavy concentration in a few megacaps means it lives and dies with their earnings and valuations.
