iShares MSCI EAFE ETF

Developed economies outside the United States and Canada are what EFA packages into a single holding. It tracks the MSCI EAFE Index - Europe, Australasia and the Far East - which covers large and mid-cap stocks across markets like Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and Australia. BlackRock launched it in 2001, and it became one of the standard tools for adding international developed-market exposure to a U.S.-heavy portfolio. Holdings are weighted by market value, so European and Japanese blue chips dominate the top of the list. Investors reach for it to diversify away from home-country concentration and to gain currency exposure, since returns move with both foreign share prices and the dollar's swings against the euro, yen and pound. It deliberately excludes emerging markets, keeping the fund focused on established economies.
