Scale and discipline are its trademarks. Exxon tends to keep drilling through downturns when rivals retreat, betting that its low costs and deep reserves will pay off when prices recover, and it has expanded aggressively in the Permian Basin and offshore Guyana. Based near Houston in Spring, Texas, it is a fixture of income portfolios for a dividend it has raised for decades. The stock is, in the end, a leveraged view on the price of oil.
