Chevron

Chevron is one of the handful of supermajors that sit at the center of the global oil business. It descends from Standard Oil, pumps and sells crude and natural gas, refines them into fuels, and runs a chemicals arm on the side, with operations spread across more than 180 countries. The integrated model is the point: when crude prices fall, refining and chemicals can cushion the blow, and when they rise, the production side carries the profits. Chevron moved its headquarters to Houston from California in recent years, planting itself in the heart of the US energy industry. Income investors have long held it for the dividend, which the company has raised for decades and defends even through the downturns that come with a commodity business. Its results track the oil price closely.
