About Halliburton
When an oil company drills a well, Halliburton is often the contractor doing the technical work. It is one of the two largest oilfield-services firms in the world, providing the pumping, cementing, and hydraulic fracturing that turn a hole in the ground into a producing well. Founded in 1919 around a cementing patent, the company sells services and equipment rather than oil itself, so its revenue tracks the drilling budgets of exploration companies rather than the oil price directly, though the two move together over time. North American shale, where fracking intensity is high, has long been its strongest market, which makes it more exposed to short-cycle U.S. activity than some peers. When crude prices fall and producers stop drilling, Halliburton's business contracts quickly; when spending returns, it rebounds hard. It competes head-to-head with SLB, the former Schlumberger, across global markets.
