Scorpio Tankers

Refined fuels like gasoline, diesel and jet fuel have to move from refineries to the markets that burn them, and Scorpio Tankers owns the ships that carry them. The Monaco-based company runs one of the largest fleets of product tankers in the world, with a heavy concentration in the larger LR2 class. Founded in 2009 by Emanuele Lauro and listed in New York, its earnings ride on tanker charter rates, which swing with global fuel demand, refinery locations and disruptions to shipping routes. When rates spike, as they did after trade flows were redrawn by the war in Ukraine, cash floods in and the company pays down debt and buys back stock; when rates fall, the picture reverses quickly. It is a pure cyclical play on the economics of moving oil products by sea.
