Down on the seabed, where human divers cannot safely work, Oceaneering's fleet of remotely operated vehicles does the inspection, construction and repair that offshore oil and gas fields depend on. The company began in 1964 as a Gulf of Mexico diving outfit and now runs the largest ROV fleet in the industry, alongside umbilicals, subsea tooling and installation services. Most revenue tracks offshore energy spending, which makes results sensitive to the oil price and to operators' willingness to fund deepwater projects. The engineering carries over, though: Oceaneering also runs defense, aerospace and entertainment businesses, and it has built mobility hardware for NASA. Headquartered in Houston since 1980, it sells one core skill, operating equipment reliably in hostile environments, whether that means three thousand meters down or in orbit.
