Teekay Tankers

Teekay Tankers hauls crude oil and refined products across the world's oceans. Formed in 2007 by Canada's Teekay Corporation, it runs a fleet built mainly around midsize Suezmax and Aframax tankers, which it employs largely in the spot market rather than on long fixed charters. That spot exposure is the whole investment case: when tanker rates spike, as they do when oil trade patterns lengthen or vessel supply tightens, cash flow can swell quickly, and when rates fall the earnings sag just as fast. The company also runs ship-to-ship transfer and lightering operations and manages vessels for others. Tankers are a cyclical, capital-heavy commodity business with little pricing power over rates, so the fleet's age, debt level and the day-rate cycle drive the stock more than anything management does.
