Petrobras

Petrobras is Brazil's state-controlled oil company and one of the largest producers in Latin America. Founded in 1953 and still majority-owned by the Brazilian government, it explores for and produces crude, refines it, and distributes fuels across the country, but its real distinction is deep-water expertise. Petrobras pioneered the technology to pump oil from the pre-salt fields far offshore, thick layers of crude trapped beneath the seabed and a barrier of salt, which now supply the bulk of its output and rank among the most productive reserves in the world.

The government's controlling stake is the defining feature for investors, for better and worse. It can mean generous dividends when policy favors shareholders, but also political pressure on fuel prices, spending and strategy that does not always align with maximizing profit. The stock ultimately tracks oil prices, Brazilian politics and the value of the real.
