Known for most of its century as Schlumberger, SLB is the largest oilfield services provider in the world. It does not pump oil itself; instead it sells the expertise and equipment producers need to find and extract it, from measuring rock deep underground to drilling wells and boosting output from aging fields. That makes its revenue a bet on exploration and production spending rather than the oil price directly, though the two move together over time. Founded in 1926 by two French brothers who pioneered electrical measurement of rock formations, the firm shortened its name to SLB in 2022 while pushing into software and lower-carbon ventures. With operations in more than 100 countries, SLB is unusually exposed to international and offshore drilling, which tends to hold up better than short-cycle US shale.
