Oil pumped from the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico is the heart of Occidental Petroleum's business. Berkshire Hathaway has become its largest shareholder, buying stock and warrants steadily. The result is an oil producer whose fortunes ride crude prices but whose story also turns on debt reduction and a contrarian bet on capturing CO2.
