When ConocoPhillips spun off its refineries as Phillips 66 in 2012, it turned itself into the largest independent company focused purely on pulling oil and gas out of the ground. Formed in 2002 from the merger of Conoco and Phillips Petroleum and headquartered in Houston, it explores for and produces hydrocarbons rather than refining or selling fuel at the pump, so its earnings track crude and natural-gas prices closely. Its acreage spreads across US shale basins like the Permian, along with Alaska and international projects, and management has leaned on large deals, including the 2024 purchase of Marathon Oil, to add low-cost barrels. The company markets itself to investors on discipline: keeping production costs low, returning cash through dividends and buybacks, and avoiding the overspending that hurt the sector in past booms. Commodity prices remain the swing factor for the stock.
