Xiaomi Corporation

Cheap, feature-packed phones built Xiaomi into one of the world's three biggest smartphone makers, alongside Samsung and Apple. The Beijing company, founded in 2010 by Lei Jun, sells hardware at thin margins and aims to make money on the ecosystem around it: a sprawling set of connected home gadgets, appliances, wearables and accessories, many made by firms Xiaomi has invested in. In 2024 it launched its first electric car, the SU7, entering a crowded Chinese EV market with the same value pitch and surprising early demand. Internet services, advertising and its software layer add higher-margin revenue on top of devices. Xiaomi's strength is scale and price, especially across India, Southeast Asia and Europe, though it competes in categories where margins stay permanently tight.
