Merchants who want to sell online without building a store from scratch are Shopify's customers. The Ottawa-based company, started in 2006 by Tobias Lutke after he struggled to set up a snowboard shop, provides the software to run a storefront, take payments, manage inventory and ship orders, across the web, social media and physical points of sale. It earns money two ways: recurring subscription fees, and a growing cut of the payments, lending and logistics its merchants use, which now generates the larger share of revenue. Often framed as the anti-Amazon, Shopify arms independent sellers rather than herding them onto one marketplace. That ties its fortunes to the health of small and mid-sized commerce, so its growth accelerates in good times for online retail and slows when consumer spending cools.
