Designers used to email files back and forth; Figma put the whole design process in the browser, so teams edit the same interface together in real time the way they would a shared document. That collaboration hook made it the default tool for product and app design and let it spread through companies from the bottom up. Adobe agreed to buy Figma for about $20 billion in 2022, but regulators in Europe balked and the deal collapsed in 2023, leaving Figma to go public on its own; it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2025. The company now sells beyond pure design into whiteboarding, developer handoff and, increasingly, AI-assisted design features, while facing the question of how much its market can grow. Founded in 2012, it is based in San Francisco.
