D-Wave Quantum

D-Wave took a different road to quantum computing than almost everyone else. Rather than chase the general-purpose gate model that IBM, Google and Rigetti pursue, it built machines around quantum annealing, an approach tuned specifically for optimization problems like scheduling, routing and logistics. That let it claim commercial quantum systems years before rivals, with early users including Lockheed Martin, Google, NASA and Los Alamos. The trade-off is that annealing is not a universal computer, so skeptics question how much of an edge it delivers over clever classical methods; the company has since added gate-model research to hedge. It sells access through a cloud service and to governments and enterprises testing quantum on real workloads. Founded in 1999 near Vancouver and now listed after a 2022 SPAC merger, D-Wave carries the same pattern as its peers: bold claims, real machines, and profits still over the horizon.
