Superconducting circuits chilled to near absolute zero are Rigetti Computing's core bet. The company designs and fabricates its own quantum processors and runs them through a cloud service, so customers can write and test quantum programs without owning the hardware. Unlike rivals that outsource chip production, Rigetti operates its own fabrication facility, which it argues lets it iterate on qubit designs faster. It sells access mainly to researchers, governments and enterprises experimenting with algorithms that may one day beat classical computers on chemistry, optimization and machine-learning problems. That one day is the catch: useful, error-corrected quantum computing is still years out, and revenue remains small against heavy spending. The stock trades as a long-dated wager on that timeline, swinging hard on technical milestones and qubit-count announcements. Based in Berkeley, California, Rigetti went public through a SPAC merger in 2022.
