No asset manager comes close to BlackRock's size. It oversees more than $12 trillion for pension funds, governments, insurers and ordinary savers, a figure larger than the economy of most countries. Much of that money sits in iShares, the exchange-traded fund business it bought from Barclays in 2009 and turned into the biggest ETF brand in the world. The other pillar is Aladdin, the risk and portfolio software that runs the firm's own books and is rented out to rival institutions, quietly tying much of Wall Street to BlackRock's plumbing. Founded in New York in 1988 as a bond shop, it grew through acquisition into a manager that touches nearly every market. Because its fees scale with assets rather than trading, its earnings tend to track the direction of global markets.
