Wells Fargo

The stagecoach in Wells Fargo's logo is a nod to its 1852 origins hauling gold and mail across the American West. Today it is one of the four giant US banks, based in San Francisco, with a franchise built on ordinary banking: taking deposits, making mortgages, small-business and commercial loans, and running credit cards and wealth management for tens of millions of customers. Unlike some rivals, it has a comparatively small Wall Street trading arm, so it lives more on lending margins and fees than on market swings. Wells Fargo spent years under a cloud after a 2016 scandal in which employees opened millions of accounts customers never asked for, prompting heavy fines and a Federal Reserve cap on how large the bank could grow. Lifting that asset cap and rebuilding trust have been central to its recovery.
