Apollo Global Management

Among the giants of alternative asset management, Apollo Global Management stands out for how much of its business runs on credit rather than buyouts. Founded in 1990, the New York firm manages hundreds of billions of dollars across private equity, but its engine today is lending: originating loans to companies and financing large deals that banks have stepped back from. Much of that capital comes from Athene, the retirement-services business Apollo merged with, which sells annuities and gives the firm a huge, stable pool of insurance money to invest. That pairing of an asset manager with a permanent balance sheet is the model competitors have raced to copy. Apollo earns management fees, performance fees and spread income on the insurance assets, and its fortunes track credit markets, interest rates and its ability to keep putting money to work.
