Jack Dorsey built Block around two very different customers. Square, the business that started it all in 2009, sells card readers and point-of-sale tools to merchants, from food trucks to large retailers. Cash App, the other half, is a consumer wallet for sending money, buying stock and buying bitcoin, and it has become the faster-growing, more profitable side. The company renamed itself from Square to Block in 2021 to signal ambitions beyond payments, including bitcoin and its Afterpay buy-now-pay-later arm. It makes money on transaction fees, subscriptions and the spread on bitcoin sales. Because Cash App leans heavily on younger users and bitcoin volumes, Block's fortunes are tied both to consumer spending and to crypto sentiment. It now trades under the ticker XYZ.
