Founded in 2012 by Joshua Kushner and two partners, Oscar Health set out to build a health insurer that felt more like a consumer tech company than a legacy carrier. It sells coverage mainly through the Affordable Care Act individual marketplaces, wrapping the plans in an app that handles telemedicine visits, appointment booking and claims, and it steers members toward cheaper care with transparent pricing. The company also licenses its technology platform to other insurers. Oscar grew membership quickly but spent years losing money, a common fate for insurers chasing the volatile individual market where medical costs are hard to predict. Reaching consistent profitability has been the central question for the stock since its 2021 listing. Based in New York City, Oscar remains far smaller than giants like UnitedHealth, betting that better software and a younger customer base can eventually make the individual-market model pay.
