The Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, built Gemini in 2014 as a regulated home for cryptocurrency trading aimed at institutions and cautious retail investors. The New York exchange lets customers buy, sell, stake and store digital assets, and it leans on compliance and licensing as its selling point in an industry known for the opposite. Gemini issued one of the earlier regulated stablecoins, the Gemini Dollar, and offers custody, a crypto rewards credit card and other services around the core exchange. Its revenue depends heavily on trading volume, which rises and falls with crypto prices, making results volatile. The company, whose legal name is Gemini Space Station, went public on the Nasdaq in 2025, giving investors a way to bet on a US-regulated exchange rather than an offshore one.
