Capital One

Credit cards built Capital One, and they remain its engine. The company grew from a 1990s idea that lenders could use data and statistical testing to price risk for individual borrowers rather than treating cardholders as one pool, and it became one of the largest card issuers in the United States. Alongside cards it runs a consumer bank funded by online deposits and a sizeable auto-lending arm. Because so much of its book is consumer credit, Capital One is highly sensitive to the economy: when unemployment rises and borrowers fall behind, loan losses climb fast, which is why the stock trades on the outlook for the U.S. consumer. Its 2025 acquisition of Discover added a payments network, giving it something Visa and Mastercard control that most card issuers lack. The Capital One name and heavy advertising have made it a household brand.
