About Citigroup
Among the four largest U.S. banks, Citigroup is the one built for the world. It runs consumer banking, but its distinctive strength is a treasury and trade operation that moves money for multinational corporations across roughly ninety countries, a network competitors cannot easily copy. The modern company was created in 1998, when Citicorp merged with Sanford Weill's Travelers Group, and for years it carried the reputation of a sprawling conglomerate that never quite fit together. Since the 2008 crisis, when it needed a large government rescue, management has spent more than a decade shrinking: selling consumer operations in overseas markets and refocusing on institutional clients and wealth. The stock has long traded below book value, a sign that investors still doubt the bank can earn its cost of capital, which makes the current turnaround the central question for shareholders.
