US Natural Gas Fund

Few funds track a commodity as literally as UNG tries to track natural gas. It holds near-month natural gas futures on the NYMEX Henry Hub benchmark and rolls them forward as each contract nears expiry, aiming to mirror day-to-day moves in the U.S. gas price. USCF Investments launched it in 2007. The catch is the roll: when later-dated futures cost more than the expiring ones, the monthly roll bleeds value, so over long stretches UNG can lag the spot price it chases even when gas is flat. That makes it a trading vehicle for short-term views on gas, not a buy-and-hold investment. Traders use it to bet on cold winters, supply disruptions or storage swings, and it is one of the most direct exchange-listed ways for a retail account to take a position on natural gas.
