About Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund

Electric, gas and water utilities from the S&P 500 make up this fund, one of the original sector SPDRs that State Street launched in December 1998. It is market-cap weighted, so the largest regulated power companies dominate: NextEra Energy, Southern, Duke and their peers. Utilities are classic defensive, income-oriented stocks, with steady regulated earnings and dependable dividends, so XLU tends to hold up when the broader market falls and lag when it races ahead. Investors reach for it as a low-volatility, yield-heavy corner of the market or as a way to tilt defensively late in a cycle. Because utilities borrow heavily to fund power plants and grids, the sector is unusually sensitive to interest rates, and the group has lately drawn fresh attention as data centers and electrification push up electricity demand.
