Symbotic

Inside Walmart's regional distribution centers, cases of goods are increasingly sorted and stacked by machines built by Symbotic. The Wilmington, Massachusetts company sells a warehouse automation system that combines autonomous robots, software and structure to receive pallets, break them into individual cases, store them densely, and rebuild custom pallets for each store. The promise is faster throughput, less labor and better use of floor space than a conventional warehouse. Symbotic grew out of the family that controls grocery distributor C&S Wholesale Grocers, and Walmart is both its largest customer and a major backer, which concentrates much of its revenue in a handful of long-term contracts. The company books deals as multi-year system deployments, so reported backlog is large but revenue and margins depend on how smoothly it installs and finishes those complex projects.
