The green and yellow tractors that work American farm fields belong to Deere & Company, better known by its John Deere brand and one of the oldest names in industry. It builds agricultural machinery above all, from combines to planters, and also makes construction, forestry and lawn equipment, plus the engines and drivetrains that go into them. A defining strength is its finance arm, which lends to the farmers and dealers who buy its expensive machines, capturing profit on both the sale and the loan. The company dates to 1837, when John Deere built a steel plow that could cut cleanly through Midwestern soil, and it still runs from Moline, Illinois. Its sales rise and fall with farm income and crop prices, so the stock is cyclical, but Deere's dealer network and growing push into precision-farming technology give it a durable edge.
