Waste Management

Garbage is a surprisingly good business, and Waste Management runs the biggest version of it in North America. The company collects household and commercial waste, hauls it to transfer stations, and buries most of it in a network of landfills it owns. Owning the landfills is the point: they are nearly impossible to permit and build today, which gives whoever controls them durable pricing power and a moat competitors cannot easily copy. Recycling and the capture of landfill gas, which WM converts into electricity and pipeline-quality fuel, add a growing second line on top of the core collection contracts. Revenue is steady because trash does not stop during recessions, and long-term municipal and commercial agreements make the cash flow predictable. That combination of essential service, hard-to-replicate assets, and recurring contracts is what draws investors to the stock.
