Japan's most famous stock gauge is the Nikkei 225, the number quoted whenever the Tokyo market moves. It tracks 225 large, actively traded companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, spanning the giants of Japanese industry from carmakers and electronics firms to banks and retailers. Unusually, it is price-weighted, meaning a company's influence depends on its share price rather than its size, a quirk it shares with America's Dow that can give a few high-priced stocks outsized sway. It has been maintained since 1970 by the Nikkei, Japan's leading business newspaper, and traces its origins to 1950. The index carries decades of history in a single line: it captured the enormous bubble of the late 1980s and the long stagnation that followed, before climbing back to record territory in recent years. For global investors it serves as the headline gauge of Japanese equities and of confidence in the country's economy.
