KraneShares SSE STAR Market 50 Index ETF

China's STAR Market is Shanghai's Nasdaq-style board for technology and science companies, and KSTR is built to track its headline benchmark. The KraneShares fund follows the STAR 50 Index, the 50 largest and most liquid names on that exchange, concentrated in semiconductors, biotech, advanced manufacturing and other sectors Beijing has prioritized. When it launched in 2021 it was the first U.S.-listed ETF dedicated to the STAR Market, opening a corner of mainland China that most foreign investors could not easily reach. It trades in dollars while its underlying holdings are onshore Chinese A-shares, so returns reflect both those companies and the yuan. Buyers use it as a targeted bet on Chinese innovation and state-backed tech ambitions, distinct from the internet giants that dominate most China funds. The exposure is narrow and policy-sensitive, which makes it more volatile than a broad China index.
