From Gulfstream business jets to nuclear submarines, General Dynamics spans an unusually wide swath of hard engineering. Four segments carry it: Aerospace builds and services Gulfstream aircraft; Marine Systems, through Electric Boat, designs and builds the Navy's submarines; Combat Systems makes the Abrams tank and wheeled armored vehicles; and Technologies runs IT and communications work for government agencies. That spread means one civilian business, corporate jets, sits alongside three that depend on defense budgets, so the aircraft cycle and Pentagon spending pull results in different directions. Formed in 1952 around Electric Boat and now based in Reston, Virginia, the company is among the largest US federal contractors. Long program lifecycles, from submarines to armored vehicles, give it a deep backlog and revenue visibility that few industrial companies can match.
