Under its old name Flextronics, Flex grew from a 1969 Silicon Valley startup into one of the largest contract manufacturers in the world. It builds products other companies design and sell, running factories across more than thirty countries for customers in autos, medical devices, industrial gear, cloud hardware, and consumer electronics. The appeal of the business is scale and diversification; the drawback is thin margins, since contract manufacturing is fiercely competitive and the manufacturer rarely owns the brand or the design. Flex has spent recent years shifting toward higher-value work, such as automotive electronics, healthcare equipment, and data-center infrastructure, to lift those margins above the commodity assembly floor. It is domiciled in Singapore but runs its corporate headquarters from Austin, Texas.
