General Electric

Once a sprawling conglomerate that made everything from light bulbs to power turbines to television networks, General Electric spent the years to 2024 breaking itself into three companies. What is left trading under the GE ticker is GE Aerospace, the jet-engine maker, headquartered in Evendale, Ohio, and treated as the legal successor to the company Thomas Edison's businesses helped form in 1892. It designs and builds engines that power much of the world's commercial airline fleet, many through CFM International, its long-running joint venture with France's Safran that produces the LEAP engines on narrowbody jets. The most valuable part of the business is services: engines sell at thin margins, then earn for decades through spare parts and maintenance on installed fleets. That aftermarket, tied to how many hours the world's planes fly, is what drives the stock.
