Three businesses sit under RTX: Collins Aerospace for avionics and cabin systems, Pratt & Whitney for jet engines, and Raytheon for missiles and air defense. The company formed in 2020 when United Technologies merged with the old Raytheon, then took the RTX name in 2023. About half its revenue comes from commercial aviation, where engines and spare parts generate decades of aftermarket service work; the rest comes from defense, funded largely by the U.S. government and allied militaries. That balance is the point. When airlines pull back, weapons demand tends to hold, and the reverse also holds. The Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan has been both a growth engine and an expensive problem, with a powder-metal defect forcing a costly fleet inspection. A backlog stretching years out gives investors unusual visibility into future work.
