Archer Aviation

Midnight is Archer Aviation's electric air taxi, a four-passenger aircraft with twelve propellers designed for short city hops of up to roughly 100 miles with quick turnarounds between flights. The company was started in 2018 and is developing the aircraft toward certification by U.S. regulators, the gate it must clear before carrying paying passengers. Archer has lined up backing that most startups lack: United Airlines placed a large conditional order and put down a deposit, and the automaker Stellantis agreed to help mass-produce the aircraft and to fund the effort. Like every eVTOL developer, it is pre-revenue and burning cash, so the story rests on hitting certification timelines and actually building at scale. The prize is a new form of urban transport; the risk is that regulation, batteries, or economics push profitable operations years further out than promised.
