Along with Europe's Airbus, Boeing forms the duopoly that builds the world's large passenger jets. Founded in Seattle in 1916 and now headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, it splits into a commercial-airplane arm that makes the 737, 787 and 777, and a defense and space unit that supplies the US military and NASA. Aircraft are sold years in advance, so the order backlog stretches into the thousands and revenue is booked slowly as planes are delivered. The last several years have been dominated by trouble: two fatal 737 MAX crashes grounded the model, the pandemic gutted demand, and a 2024 door-plug blowout renewed scrutiny of manufacturing quality. Boeing has burned cash and taken on debt while working to steady production and clear its backlog. As a top US exporter and defense contractor, its recovery matters well beyond its own shareholders.
