Aurora Innovation

Founded by veterans of Google, Tesla and Uber's self-driving programs, Aurora Innovation is building autonomous technology for trucks rather than robotaxis. Its product, the Aurora Driver, is a hardware and software system meant to be installed in freight trucks so they can haul loads down highways without a human at the wheel. The company chose the Dallas-to-Houston corridor as its first commercial route.

Chris Urmson, Sterling Anderson and Drew Bagnell started Aurora in 2017, and it went public through a SPAC merger in 2021. It is still pre-profit and spends heavily on development, so its value rests on getting driverless trucks running at scale and signing freight and manufacturing partners. Success hinges on proving the technology is safe and cheaper than paying human drivers over long hauls.
