Rambus

Most of Rambus's money comes from licensing, not manufacturing. Founded in 1990, the company designs the high-speed interfaces that move data between processors and memory, and it earns royalties whenever chipmakers build those designs into their products. Rambus first became famous, and controversial, for RDRAM and the patent fights that followed over DDR memory standards. The business today is quieter and broader: memory interface chips for servers, security IP that protects data on a chip, and a large portfolio of licensable patents. Server memory is the growth story, since every AI and cloud data center needs faster, denser memory modules, and Rambus sells the buffer chips that make them work. It is a small company sitting at a chokepoint most investors never see.
