About Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation
SMIC is mainland China's largest contract chip manufacturer, a foundry that builds semiconductors to other companies' designs rather than selling its own. Founded in Shanghai in 2000 and partly state-owned, it makes chips across a broad range of process nodes for customers such as Qualcomm and Broadcom, and has become central to Beijing's push for domestic chip supply.
That national importance is also SMIC's biggest complication. US export controls cut off its access to the most advanced lithography equipment, which caps how far it can push toward the leading-edge nodes that TSMC and Samsung produce. The company has still managed to fabricate advanced chips for domestic customers, drawing intense scrutiny abroad. For investors the stock is really a bet on China's semiconductor self-sufficiency drive, subsidies included, weighed against the ceiling those sanctions impose on its technology.
