Chip designers face a hard problem once a system-on-chip grows past a few blocks: how do all those cores, accelerators and memory controllers talk to each other without choking. Arteris sells the answer. Its network-on-chip IP is the on-chip wiring and traffic control that connects the pieces, and it licenses that technology rather than making chips itself. Customers pay license fees up front and royalties as their chips ship, so revenue builds slowly but compounds. The designs show up in automotive electronics, AI accelerators, data-center silicon and consumer devices. Based in Campbell, California and founded in 2003, Arteris is small next to the big IP houses, but its niche matters more as chips get denser and the interconnect, not the transistors, becomes the bottleneck.
