Chargers, laptops and cars all rely on chips that manage and convert electrical power, and that is the business Alpha and Omega Semiconductor built. Known in the trade as AOS, the company designs power MOSFETs, power management integrated circuits, insulated-gate bipolar transistors and power modules, plus a growing line of silicon carbide parts. These are the unglamorous components that step voltages up and down, protect circuits and keep power flowing efficiently inside computing, consumer electronics, communications, industrial and automotive systems.

Founded in Silicon Valley in 2000, AOS competes against much larger analog and discrete chipmakers, so it leans on specific design wins, cost and reliable supply rather than raw scale. A meaningful slice of its manufacturing and sales runs through China, which ties its fortunes to that market and to the shifting rules around chip trade.
