GlobalFoundries

Few contract chip manufacturers of real scale operate outside Asia; GlobalFoundries, carved out of AMD in 2009, is one of them. Unlike the fabless firms that only design chips, it runs the fabrication plants that actually make them, producing wafers for hundreds of customers in autos, smartphones, defense, aerospace and communications. Its plants sit in the United States, Germany and Singapore.

GlobalFoundries made a deliberate choice years ago to stop chasing the smallest, most advanced nodes where TSMC and Samsung compete, and instead specialize in reliable, feature-rich mature-node chips. That focus on power management, radio-frequency and other specialty processes gives it defensible niches and government interest in domestic chip supply. Headquartered in Malta, New York, it listed publicly in 2021, though its former owner, Abu Dhabi's Mubadala, still holds the majority of the shares.
