Display panels need a driver chip to control their pixels, and Himax Technologies makes them by the billion. The Taiwanese fabless designer is best known for display driver ICs and timing controllers, the parts that translate a video signal into the precise voltages that light up each pixel on televisions, monitors, laptops, phones, and car dashboards. Automotive displays have become an important and stickier market for it, since cars increasingly pack multiple screens. Himax also builds wafer-level optics and image sensors used in 3D sensing and machine vision. Being fabless, it designs the chips and leaves fabrication to foundries, so its margins hinge on both chip pricing and the notoriously cyclical demand for consumer displays. Founded in 2001 and based in Tainan, Taiwan, Himax trades on the Nasdaq through American depositary shares.
