About Opera
Few browsers are as old as Opera, which dates to 1995, when it began as a project inside Norwegian telecom Telenor before spinning out as its own company in Oslo. It never rivaled Chrome or Safari in scale, so it competes by carving out niches: a built-in VPN and ad blocker, a crypto-oriented browser, the lightweight Opera Mini popular in emerging markets, and more recently browsers with built-in AI. Since 2016 the browser business has been controlled by Chinese investors led by Kunlun Tech, and the company now trades on Nasdaq as Opera Limited. Most of its money comes from search and advertising deals plus a growing e-commerce and fintech push, particularly in Africa. The investment case rests on monetizing a modest but loyal user base rather than winning the browser wars outright.
